Default What to make a 2wd chassis from...

Like the title says, what is the best thing to make a 2wd chassis out of? I seen some where about 1.5" alum square tubing? Would this work, or would something else be better? This will be my first pulling truck build, but I have access to a mill and lathe to do the metal work. I am looking at either a 2wd nitro or pro modified nitro. Any help would be very helpful.

Thanks!!

If you have the equipment to build the chassis then you can use pretty much whatever you want. I would recommend using square aluminum tube though. 1.5" to 2" would be about as small as I would go for your type of build. I use 1" square tube for our carpet tractors, but I am not machining much of it out so the stregth is still there. With a nitro motor you will have a little more to cut out so you will want to use something a little stronger. Good luck with the truck.

Thanks dlmealy.
I have been looking at Grady's 2wd nitro for some tips, but its kinda hard to tell much. I am thinking about doing the gears and chain drive he has on his, but not a 100% sure yet. I have a buddy that can get me any thing that I need as far as the tires and electronics, so that aint any problem. Does anyone know where I might could get ahold of some good pictures to go by for the chassis?

Thanks!!

As for the tubing that I will use, it will be 1.5". My dad has a quite a bit of it at his shop.

What scale is you truck going too be?? 1.5" tubing is really big for a nitro or electric? I use 1"x .5" aluminum bar for my 1/4 scale 2wd puller. Solid stock is much stronger and better for a puller.

I was looking at 1/10. But I will go with whatever I can get to work right.

wow ... 1/2" thick aluminum ... I bet that's a beast

I use 1.25" or 1.50" x 0.125" sq. aluminum tubing ... works just fine for 1/10th electric .... 2WD or 4WD.

That's the great thing about pulling ... every builder has there only ideas how to re-invent the wheel to gain an advantage over the competition

Default Scratchbuilt

A 15-year-old build that was only run for a couple shakedowns before our club folded. Machined from a box section of aluminum. 3 gear reductions and chain final drive, motor mounts on both sides, and both plastic and drilled steel gears for different classes. Hitch is anchored at the middle of the chassis and adjusts at the rear. We ran on carpet with weight classes up to 30 lbs. and pulling some incredible weight.
