there is a BIG difference between powering a onroad car and a 5'' tall tire'd offroad truck. Neither motor or ESC are a quality part, and by being in a offroad truck with such large tires they're out of normal operating domain.

You can try playing with gear ratios like we've been discussing, but in reality you are trying to power bigfoot with a toymota celica engine.

Does anyone know if a Traxxas 12.5 would run alright with a Novak Super Rooster for racing? I know it can handle a 15t motor but I'd be using it for racing purposes and not bashing.

Don't you mean traxxas 12 turn brushed motor?
If so it will run fine, but I don't think you'll be impressed. Plus the traxxas motors are hit or miss with longivity/durability. Some are good, but about 60% are junk real quick.

A super rooster can easily handle 12 turns, do you mean rooster because novak made both. Super rooster guys used to run in clods all the time with pretty hot motors.

Alright, i just didn't know if it was able to handle it and not toast it. I was thinking about turning the chassis but maybe doing it an easier way by switching the connections on the motor and swapping the axles around, would this be alright to do?

I don't think that ESC is even rated for a 15 turn motor. If so that's a part of the reason things are HOT.

If it is just run it and let it cook. It's a throw away motor and ESC anyway.
I had a Duratrax Sprint 2 ESC on my WK to begin with and I read they are rated for 20T max... but some people run 19T on them and are ok.. I ran that 20T stinger on mine with a 2s lipo and the thing like never got hot even... only warm, and not very at that..

a little warm is expected. are you now running 64/10?
if you switch to a better esc you should be able to come back up quite a bit pinion size.

should not have to worry to much with a super rooster. Super rooster was a great esc and took lots of abuse.nn

either way, your ratio is nearly double mine.
like Bill said, the rooster should handle quite a bit.
you could probably up your pinion to as high as 16 or 17 and still be ok,
assuming there arent any clearance issues.

My ESC was warmer than my motor was. Should I worry about it or is that normal with a Novak?

can you put your hand on it and hold it?
With a SUPER rooster in there if it's hot something is wrong. A SUPER rooster should be overkill in there.

Even a plain old rooster should only become warm in a wheely king.

Yeah, i can put my hand on it and it not bother it but the motor itself is a lot cooler. Could it be the bullet connectors that are making it warmer?

It's a Novak Rooster, I thought it was a Super, that's my fault.

if your able to hold your hand on it then there is no worry. Keep driving.

And trust me when I say there is a HUGE difference between the 2 roosters. The SR is a great esc, the plain one is meh, take it or leave it it's just basic.

For future info..
If you can hold your hand on a ESC or motor firmly for more than 10 seconds you are safe. Batteries you want to be able to hold it tight longer. LIPO should never be hot. EVER.

Less than 10 seconds you need to fix something, gearing, driving style, motor or something. 3 seconds is really pushing it, you've probably done some damage. Some may say 3 or 5 seconds but I don't that's just too hot. Heat and electronics are like water and electronics, don't mix them.
