if I was building it I would narrow the rear end down as far as I could go but mine are only a little narrower that 12" after all was said and done

...a couple of pics of the design so far. The angle grinder gears came in today, Makita, and look very nice. There is gonna be a bit of machining to do on the spur but it looks like they're up to the task. Thanks to all who have helped so far

Don't think it really matters narrow or wide. Whatever looks right I guess.

Looks great so far!

Update.... the motor showed up today, it's just sick! Took a couple of passes on the spur gear in the lathe, pretty tough material. Carbide tools are required and tapping holes is out of the question, for me anyway. No question about them being stout enough though. Saito owners manual lists the output as 7 HP! probably more than a little optimistic but fun to brag about.

How powerful should the steering servo for an Insane puller be?

..is 60 in/oz enough?

I use regular cheap servos the front get really light on them when they run.

Thanks! I'll get the mini-servo I've been looking at. It makes 64 oz/in and will fit right in my front axle

I've got about 1/2" of ground clearance at the lower two valve covers with the front wheels on the ground. Sound about right?

I would not recomend using a mini servo. I had one on mine originally and had nothing but trouble with it. The high speed that these things run down the track does not help the servo when you brush the wall. I tore up at least three mini servos with servo savers before I switched to the standard sized Futabas. Like Joe said nothing fancey is needed.

Dang! ...though I was thinking, 15lbs pulling 65lbs might be a little rough on a mini servo, though it does have the torque of a standard servo and metal gears... I have the front axle drawn both ways so I guess I'll revert to the bigger configuration.

...any comment on the ground clearance?

Don't feel like you have to change. You may have a better servo that will take a little more abuse than what I was using. As for the clearance as long as you have at least .25" you should be fine.

But... if you bust up a steering block, your valve cover might be the next closest thing to the ground? At least that's the way it looks from the side view.

I'll ponder the servo question for a bit....

Yes, one of the things that makes this so "Insane" is how inappropriate a radial is for the intended use. It's a big motor and even dragging the valve covers it will have a higher than idea CG I would think. The Dutch tractor that inspired me definitely has the lower two cylinders plowing furrows at times it seems. I guess it comes with the territory.

I haven't even finished designing it and it's way over budget for time & $.... but it'll be pretty bad-azz to finally fire it up and try to pull something.

The insane puller project is coming along and I'll try to post some pics in the next week or so, it may be a roller by then. A lot more work than I expected, but stuff always seems that way. Thanks for all the help/info so far.

Some quick pics.... I'm pretty happy with it so far. No really big issues yet, though it'll need to go on a diet... it's almost 12 lbs now
Still tons of details to work out, but it may run this summer if I can keep putting the time into it

Looking good. Do you plan to run at any NR/CTPA events?

Please take a video when you fire it up. I can't wait to hear it run.

Thanks, it's coming out OK... but heavy

I'll need to get it running, down to weight and figured out before I think about bringing it to an event. Once it's pulling a decent amount of weight I'll try to get up to a pull with the RC Pullers of CNY?

Yeah, I can't wait to hear it run... I'll get a vid of the event!

It's all been done on a Bridgeport EZ Trak 2 axis & a tool-room lathe.
